Corinne Bailey Rae

Corinne Bailey Rae's debut was a number One hit in her native England, a fact that has U.S. bizzers buzzing about its potential with the adult-alternative crowd over here. The twenty-seven-year-old's voice suggests a warmer, less weird Macy Gray, and she uses it without a hint of diva showiness on breezy, sometimes sleepy songs that evoke girls sassing back and forth in the sweet summertime. The music-will-soothe-your-soul single "Put Your Records On" sets Brit- inflected coos over acoustic guitar and a hip-hop groove before opening into a chorus worthy of prime Stevie Wonder, and charmers like "Trouble Sleeping" are all dreamy swoons, lush accompaniment and fairly effective hooks. But the album is occasionally more interesting than her mellow mien would suggest: "Choux Pastry Heart" is full of evocative heartache, and the funked-out "I'd Like To" is a sharp sketch of urban life with a sexually charged chorus. Corinne Bailey Rae is as pop-wise as it is overly gentle and one to grow on.

Sterling Simms - Yours, Mine & The Truth

Let's change pace to some R&B.
Artist: Sterling Simms
Album: Yours, Mine and the Truth
Release Date: 12.23.08

Tracklist:
01. All I Need (Feat. Jadakiss)
02. Playa
03. DUI (80 On The Freeway)
04. Single
05. Bad Dream
06. Jump Off (Feat. Sean Paul)
07. I Know
08. Boom Boom Room
09. Best Friend
10. Doin' Dat Dere
11. Sex In The City
12. Let Her Go
13. She Should Be Thanking You

After a few previous attempts and some delays, it sounds as if Def Jam recording artist Sterling Simms has finally perfected his formula for his debut album Yours, Mine & The Truth . The album features noteworthy production from Tricky and the Dream, and Simms' own squad, the Knightwritaz. Simms' vocal range stands out, and there's a lot of versatility throughout the project in both content and production, making this a great album all around.

Jadakiss drops some bars on the album's opening cut and lead single All I Need , while Sean Paul (Youngbloodz) contributes the southern swag to Jump Off , which originally received airplay a few years ago from a project that was never officially released. Ya gotta admire the recklessness of a fiend on DUI (80 on the Freeway) , where not even the "boys in blue" can keep him from an intoxicated drive to satisfy the deepest of sexual cravings. The fantasies continue on Boom Boom Room , and Sex In The City , another highlight of the album where Simms' falsetto is showcased over a sultry Knightwritaz beat. Switching gears a bit, the album takes a sensitive turn on songs like the all-too-familiar Bad Dream , a regretful number about losing love and an obvious prequel to Let Her Go , one of the vocal highlights of the album. Fellas, I think we can all relate to the feeling of Single , a laidback joint that opens with strums on an acoustic guitar and relives the feelings of bachelor-style freedom. She Should Be Thanking You closes out the disc on a mellow note with an unusual message: it's an open letter to an ex-girlfriend after he realizes how much of a better man she made him - a better man that the next girl now enjoys.

Yours, Mine and the Truth is a solid start for the R&B singer, as this album shows his potential for greatness. It's easy to hear that he draws artistic influence from music's finest, ranging from Sam Cooke to Brian McKnight to Usher. I highly recommend this joint to all the R&B heads especially if you're in need of something new and different. I'm anxious to hear what he can do with some old school covers and I'm already anticipating his next single. Go ahead and cop this joint, it's the truth

Happy Circle EP

Happy Circle EP

Taiwan pop rock trio Happy Circle have finally come up with their debut EP, and instead of calling it "Doughnuts for the Ear" - which is what many people liken their music to - they have given it the title Hello Tomorrow. The band is formed by female vocalist Katie and guitarists Whyn and Prince JR., who enthrall listeners with their fantastic match of folky sound and endearing voice. Members of Happy Circle have written songs for many other popular artists, including Angela Chang, Lollipop, Hey Girl, Nicholas Teo, Elva Hsiao, Huang Jing Lun, Fahrenheit, and Rainie Yang. The band's EP has 3 songs, namely the title number Hello Tomorrow, "Smattering", and "Dawn".

Coming in second would be his Shall We Dance- Shall We Talk! album. I believe this is his second album under EEG (Music Plus). Gotta say EEG produces some great pop hits, even though they have mostly an idols. Again, Eason emphasizes on his singing techniques in tracks like Shall we dance, Shall we talk, 怪物, 孤獨探戈, 黑暗中漫舞, 信心花舍, etc.

Khalil Fong Live in Toronto - June 5, 2009 @ Roy Thomson Hall

Wow, what a night. Finally got to see Khalil live. I've been following his music since his debut album "Soulboy". For his concert in Toronto, he impressed us with a lot of English covers including "I feel good", "Georgia on my mind", "Billie Jean", etc. All of them were done with acoustic accomplianment with either guitar or piano. Although it was a funny and warm concert overall, it was different from his "This Love Live 07" and "Wonderland Live 08" concert, it lacked the variety of songs, probably because it was a smaller concert in Toronto. Also, Fiona Sit was real fun when she came out, she sang three songs and went around to shake hands with the audience, I was one of the lucky ones =P

I really wanted him to sing "拖男帶女", and "叫我怎麼說", those songs woulda been great for concert atmosphere. Another great thing was that he sang a lot of songs from his new album Orange Moon. He sang "singalongsong", "1234567", "黑白" (acoustic), "三人遊", and "每個人都會".

Hope you come back soon Khalil!

oh, and for fans in HK, look out for this
